Stay’s Homeless Outreach Service

Stay’s Homeless Outreach Service has helped a number of homeless and vulnerable individuals and families.

Stay’s Homeless Outreach Service has become the first point of call for vulnerable and homeless people which has resulted in a reduction of rough sleepers in Telford and has also prevented a number of individuals becoming homeless.

The service works outside of office hours and includes detached street work to actively seek individuals who are rough sleeping.  The Homeless Outreach Service has helped a range of people; the youngest only 16, and the oldest 67.

The outreach workers assess individual needs and address these by providing support, direct referral or joint working with other services.  A needs assessment is carried out when meeting each person which focuses on preventing people sleeping rough, reducing antisocial behaviour on the streets and preventing crime, reducing risk of drugs & alcohol misuse, reducing the risk of  domestic abuse, reducing the risk of re-offending, ensuring that people are better able to manage their physical and mental health and providing emergency provisions i.e. food, water, clothing, tents etc.

The Outreach Workers attend KIP, an appointment based drop in service to actively assess and prioritise individuals for access to housing and other services and support them in entering accommodation and engaging in support services to meet their aspirations away from the streets.

The outreach workers have engaged with people attending ‘Thrive’ drop in’s who were facing eviction and provided support and assistance to avoid eviction or find alternate accommodation.

In addition, the outreach workers work to challenge negative perceptions and stereotypes of the issues that surround homelessness and work closely with the local council and other organisations on issues around homelessness including participating in street counts/audits as required.
